Bespoke hand carved in solid wood

This pineapple sitting on top of a bamboo is a newel- a post at the end of a flight of stairs which supports the handrail. This was a custom design by our firm, I gave a brief to the studio on what I wanted. One of the talented interior designers in our office came up with the drawing which was executed by master carvers in Bataan. This is made of solid wood and is quite heavy.

Done in hand carved wood, we decided on a bamboo design to echo the stairs balustrade, which is in a bamboo style as well. It’s important to echo things in your design to connect aspects of it. We painted the bottom half in a very glossy almost car-paint finish but kept the top portion matte. Initially, the pineapple portion was glossy, but the whole thing ended up looking plasticky.
