OBJECT COMPOSITION IN GREY

Console tables were traditionally supported by brackets as opposed to four legs, but have since evolved to include their four legged kin.

In this particular example, I use an old desk I have had since childhood and place it in a hallway. A console is typically backed up against a wall, and so, will have a definitive front.

I chose a pair of glass tablelamps in grey to flank each side of the console. Pairs are great because they frame the composition. Imagine a line that runs in the centre of the table horizontally, I placed them in the back half of the table. They will form part of the composition’s background.

Choose a table and an area to place it. Consider the shape of the table, and angles the table will be viewed from. Think of the objects you will place in terms of foreground and background. That way, the layering you do is straightforward, neat and relatively easy.

Books are fantastic because they give insight to the homeowner’s. For a monochromatic effect, choose books in coordinated themes and tones. I had several books, which I divided into two piles and placed in front of each lamp to create a foreground.

Flowers are a great addition to any scheme like these Aranda orchids. Placing them in the center of the two lamps makes them a focal point.

I added a candle to light whenever the mood strikes. Notice the placement of the candle, in some Eastern traditions, I am told that candles should never be in front of photographs.

Framed photographs, are perhaps the most personal items you can place in a table, I like to use frames that match elements already in the table. I used silver toned frames to match the steel in the lampshades.I placed them in the centre of the table, right in front of the flowers; shorter frame in front, and taller frame behind. This creates more layers, but still keeps things orderly as each item on the table is still visible.

One of my frames is lightly tarnished, it should really be polished.

I like the patina of the oxidised metal.
